A SHORT FIELD SESSION / OBSERVER'S NOTES

How to make fifteen minutes under the sky count

Everything here can be practiced a little at a time, from wherever you can see the sky.

01 / 04

Check the conditions

Cloud cover, nearby lighting and the phase of the Moon shape what is visible. A bright night is not a failure; simply choose an easy target.

02 / 04

Let the scene settle

Put away the bright phone screen and wait until your eyes become comfortable in the dark. There is no need to rush from star to star.

03 / 04

Finish with a note

Write the time, rough direction and one pattern you recognised. A tiny sketch may be easier to remember than a paragraph of names.

04 / 04

Begin with a short visit

Fifteen minutes with one clear goal often teaches more than a long session spent searching for everything at once.
